In 1954, Roger Bannister hit the tape in Oxford to run the first sub-4 minute mile. He broke not only the perceived physical barrier, but (more importantly) the psychological barrier.
That same year, one other athlete ran a sub-4 minute mile: John Landy. And the year after that, 4 other athletes did.
In 2019, Eliud Kipchoge ran a marathon in 1:59:40 in a controlled environment, ultimately proving that it's possible. When will we see the first official sub-2 hour marathon race result?
